The Grand Union threads past Deppers Bridge on its way from London to Birmingham. The Bascote staircase locks and the flight at Stockton are minutes away — watch boats work through, then follow the flat towpath as far as your legs fancy.
Canalside pubs pace the route perfectly, and further afield the famous 21‑lock Hatton flight — “the Stairway to Heaven” — makes a grand half‑day walk with a café at the top.
